Skins & Frames for ChangeHED bodhráns
Skins & Frames for ChangeHED bodhráns
The ChangeHED skin holding system allows to easily change the head and the tuning rim of the drum. This opens a lot of new possibilities:
Try out other heads and tuning frames with different sound characteristics on the very same drum?
A synthetic head for the outdoor gig
Christian Hedwitschak offers a great variety of tuning rims and skin types on his website, which all fit on the ChangeHED system. These offer a lot more possibilities for all customers.
Drum heads
We offer both natural skins and synthetic skins for the ChangeHED system.
natural skins
Working natural skins in itself requires much experience, fingertip sensitivity and expertise, as goatskins are composed of 7 different structures each of which have different characteristics.
The only part of a goat that continues to live on for decades is the skin which is personally carefully selected for each individual requirement by me. I am always very aware that I am dealing with part of a living creature and therefore this work demands respectful handling.
Natural skins have a tendency to want to stretch evenly all the time, because, just like wood, they can absorb and release moisture, expand and contract, adapting to the ambient humidity.
Synthetic Drumheads
When used correctly, synthetic drumheads offer exceptional tuning stability and outstanding sound quality.
We always recommend combining them with a tuning frame specifically designed for synthetic drumheads, which we also offer as part of a convenient bundle. When tuned precisely, they meet the expectations of even the most discerning ears. The sound remains clear and nearly indistinguishable from natural drumheads, while being virtually unaffected by climate changes or sweat on the drumhead.
However, synthetic drumheads require more precise tuning than natural ones, as they don’t tighten evenly by themselves. Our specially designed tuning frame for synthetic drumheads leverages their unique qualities and meets the increased demands of tuning. A smaller radius where the head meets the frame enhances the precise, clear tone, while the cotton padding acts as a buffer, making it easier to tune evenly and allowing the drumhead to vibrate more cleanly.
Tuning rims
Different tuning rim profiles with individual bearing edge designs influence the sound of each and every individual drum skin.
-
The compressor tuning rim produces a dryer and more defined sound and is therefore a welcome alternative for studio recordings or on stage.
-
For synthetic skins, we offer a special tuning frame with cotton-covered bearing edge that makes the skin a bit more “natural” without making it lax or imprecise.
- The Universal Comfort Tuning rim WITH chamois leather-covered bearing edge is suitable for all skin types, without influencing the sound too much in one direction. Its profile is slightly curved to the inside and offers maximum playing comfort!
- The Bassmonster tuning rim with a thick chamois leather-covered bearing edge and a large rounded profile interior gets the maximum of long vibrating, warm and rich base sounds out of every drum skin.
- The Universal Comfort Tuning rim WITHOUT chamois leather-covered bearing edge helps to reach the highest possible brilliance when using harder skins (softer skins may start to produce squeaking sounds).
- The RWE compressor tuning without chamois leather covered bearing edge offers the afore mentioned advantages of the compressor tuning rim and adds extra clarity and an even crispier sound, espcecially when combined with a Lambeg skin. Instead of the chamois leather cover, a carefully polished wax surface is applied here.
bearing edge covers
The area where the drum skin touches the hoop is critical for the sound quality.
In addition to the size of the rounding and the internal angle (‘free milling’), the surface of the contact area between the drum skin and hoop is crucial.
Three variants are applied here:
- Polished wax rim:
Here the drum skin is in direct contact with the wood of the tuning frame. The bearing edge (outer curve and relief milling) is carefully smoothed and given a polished wax surface. This makes the bearing edge very hard, smooth and resistant to moisture. With rather harder skins (EdlauerSelect, Lambeg, Kangaroo), a precise, short-swinging and rather dry sound is achieved. (Standard version for CoreLine, RWE, CBss).
With softer, more elastic skins such as DRAGONSkin or very well-worn skins, this type of head rest may, under certain circumstances, lead to squeaking noises when pressing the skin with the hand (the drum skin slips with a creaking sound over the tuning rim).
In this case, a chamois leather head rest is recommended. - Chamois leather padding:
This soft leather strip acts as a buffer zone, making the entire drum a little less susceptible to vibration and allowing the skin to tighten more effectively. . The rimshot sound is tamed a little, some jangling overtones are reduced and the skin is prevented from squeaking. Depending on the drum model, the drum skin used and the desired sound, chamois leather of varying thickness and quality is applied.
This is the standard finish for MONss, EMsig, MOS2 and all DRAGONSkin drums. - Cotton padding:
This special solution is used primarily for the tuning frame for synthetic skins: similar to the chamois leather, the woven structure of the padding has a balancing effect. This leads to a more beautiful resonance of the skin, making the sound warmer and more natural, less technical.
The cotton layer makes tuning synthetic skins considerably easier, as these have to be tuned more precisely than natural skins (since they do not tighten by themselves).
This version is also vegan.

Mounting
The drum skin, tuning frame and main frame should always be mounted in the same position in relation to each other (e.g. logo stamp on the main frame, IsolatHED sticker on the tuning frame and the seam of the decorative band with the two nails on top of each other). This ensures that the best possible sound is achieved each time the stamp is reassembled.
The components adapt to each other during the playing-in process.
Synthetic setup
If the pair of tuning frames and head are purchased together as a synthetic setup, you get the best possible sound result, because both components have been adapted to each other during production (postforming of the synthetic head). To achieve the best possible repetition effect when reassembling, it is essential to install the components in the same position relative to each other. This position is indicated by cross marks (where the decorative ribbon joins the fur, and the IsolateHED sticker on the tuning frame).

Vacuum bag
Vacuum bag
Natural drum skins that are not pre-mounted under tension are sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly humidity. They can absorb and release moisture from the air, which may lead to contraction or warping. In extreme cases, this can render the skins unusable.
To protect the drum skins during transport and storage, each one is delivered in a resealable vacuum bag. This bag allows for easy re-storage, helping to maintain the integrity of unmounted skins. The vacuum valve enables you to reseal the bag using a standard vacuum cleaner—detailed instructions are provided on or within the packaging.
For natural skins, simply storing them in the sealed bag, without removing air, is typically sufficient. This prevents moisture absorption and ensures the skin retains its shape.
In the case of synthetic skins, especially HEDge skins, creating a vacuum is recommended. This helps prevent the black tape from peeling off—a risk that is more likely with newer skins, as the adhesive takes time to reach full strength.
History of the vacuum bag
Since 2014, various methods have been explored to prevent unmounted drum skins from deforming. Initially, a thick plywood plate with centering holes was used, secured to the ChangeHED skin by a metal tensioner. While this approach was effective, it was costly, complex, heavy, and did not protect the skins from environmental factors.
In a later attempt, the transport plate was made thinner and held in place with rubber plugs. This solution was more affordable, easier to assemble, and lighter, but the drum skin remained exposed to changes in ambient climate.
After extensive testing, the vacuum bag method has proven to be the most effective. Though vacuum pressure may cause slight contraction of the skin, the playing surface largely retains its shape. More importantly, the vacuum seals the drum skin from the environment, which is the key to preventing deformation.
An added benefit is that if the vacuum bag becomes damaged, it can be easily replaced with inexpensive, locally available clothing vacuum bags.
Preconfigured skins and frames
geWe offer a few combinations as pre-configured options that are available for immediate delivery. These include the RWE Lambeg skin and the RWE compressor tuning frame, which can turn any ChangeHED bodhrán into an RWE...at least as far as the skin and tuning frame are concerned :-).
In contrast to the normal compressor tuning frame, the RWE compressor tuning frame does not have a chamois leather covering on the bearing ede, but a polished wax pad for extra crisp sound.
We also offer the combination of Remo Skyntone and the matching tuning frame especially for synthetic skins as a pre-configured option, and also the Remo Skyntone skin itself is usually in stock.
